Questions people ask about Austria pay

On โ‚ฌ55,000 gross for 2026 the net figure is around โ‚ฌ35,100 a year, near enough โ‚ฌ2,926 a month. Lohnsteuer accounts for roughly โ‚ฌ9,900 and employee social insurance for about โ‚ฌ9,970.

The order matters in Austria: social insurance is taken off first, and income tax is then applied to what is left rather than to the full gross.

The Einkommensteuertarif for 2026 runs as follows:
0% up to โ‚ฌ12,816
20% from โ‚ฌ12,817 to โ‚ฌ20,818
30% from โ‚ฌ20,819 to โ‚ฌ34,513
40% from โ‚ฌ34,514 to โ‚ฌ66,612
48% from โ‚ฌ66,613 to โ‚ฌ99,266
50% from โ‚ฌ99,267 to โ‚ฌ1,000,000
55% on anything above โ‚ฌ1,000,000

Deducted from gross earnings in 2026:
Pension, PV: 10.25%
Health, KV: 3.87%
Unemployment, AV: 3.0%
Accident cover: employer pays this one
That comes to roughly 18.12% for the employee, charged on earnings up to the ASVG ceiling of โ‚ฌ6,450 a month.

It is a standing credit for people who travel to work, worth โ‚ฌ487 a year. Those on lower incomes may pick up a Pendlereuro on top, scaled to how far the commute is. Neither needs claiming separately: both are handled inside the Lohnsteuer assessment.

Most Austrian contracts pay holiday money, Urlaubsgeld, and a Christmas payment, Weihnachtsgeld, which together amount to a 13th and 14th month. Up to โ‚ฌ2,100 of that is taxed at a flat 6%, with normal rates resuming beyond it.

It is a real advantage and it is why Austria's headline rates overstate what people actually hand over across a full year.
